Is it true that pounamu should be gifted rather than bought for oneself?Traditionally, pounamu is gifted as a sign of love, respect, or friendship. However, it is now common for people to purchase it for personal reasons, especially if it holds special meaning.

Should I have my pounamu blessed?While not required, many people choose to have their pounamu blessed in water or through a Māori karakia (prayer) to acknowledge its spiritual significance.

Can I take pounamu out of New Zealand?Yes, tourists can take legally purchased pounamu overseas. Some countries may have import restrictions on stone materials, so check local customs regulations before traveling.

Is it bad luck if my pounamu breaks?Some believe a broken pounamu has served its purpose by protecting the wearer. Many Māori return broken pounamu to a river or have it re-carved into a new shape.

Can I collect pounamu myself?No, only Māori with customary rights can collect pounamu from natural sources. Tourists should purchase carved pounamu from reputable artists and stores.

How much is it to carve my own at Bonz n StonzOur carving experiences include all materials from start to finish, along with full tutor support. Bone – $120 Pāua – $100 Pounamu (Greenstone) – $200 If you prefer, you’re also welcome to bring your own material for a Bring Your Own experience (pricing varies) Each booking is for one person and one carving. Maximum carving size applies unless pre-arranged. Most carvings are completed within 4-5 hours. Additional time may incur extra fees. Health & Safety guidelines must be followed at all times.

What do i need to do before attending a 'carve your own' booking?To make the most of your time, please come with an idea of what you’d like to create. This will help avoid long decision-making during your session. Do you have a design in mind? (If not, we recommend researching beforehand for inspiration.) Which material best suits your design? Bone, Pāua, or Pounamu?
