FAQ

  • Is it true that pounamu should be gifted rather than bought for oneself?
Traditionally, pounamu is gifted as a sign of love, respect, or friendship. However, it is now common for people to purchase it for personal reasons, especially if it holds special meaning.
  • Should I have my pounamu blessed?
While not required, many people choose to have their pounamu blessed in water or through a Māori karakia (prayer) to acknowledge its spiritual significance.
  • Can I take pounamu out of New Zealand?
Yes, tourists can take legally purchased pounamu overseas. Some countries may have import restrictions on stone materials, so check local customs regulations before traveling.
  • Is it bad luck if my pounamu breaks?
Some believe a broken pounamu has served its purpose by protecting the wearer. Many Māori return broken pounamu to a river or have it re-carved into a new shape.
  • Can I collect pounamu myself?
